Pool Acid Washing

A deep surface treatment that removes stains and scale from plaster pools in Glendale, done with the pool drained.

When Brushing No Longer Removes the Stains

Over the years, plaster pools collect stains and mineral deposits that regular brushing cannot lift. Dark patches from leaves and algae, gray or white scale from hard water, and dull, rough surfaces all make a pool look older than it is. When the water is clear but the surface still looks dirty, an acid wash may be the answer.

Pool acid washing removes a very thin layer of the plaster surface, taking stains and scale with it and revealing fresher plaster underneath. Because it does remove material, it is not something to repeat often, and it is not right for every surface type.

What Acid Washing Involves

  • Inspecting the plaster to confirm acid washing is appropriate
  • Draining the pool safely and handling the water properly
  • Applying a diluted acid solution to the walls and floor in sections
  • Rinsing each section and neutralizing the wash water
  • Cleaning the tile line and fittings while the pool is empty
  • Refilling and balancing the fresh water

Our Acid Wash Process

Acid washing takes care and planning to protect your surface.

Evaluate the Surface

We check the age and condition of the plaster and the cause of the staining before recommending an acid wash.

Drain and Wash

With the pool drained, we wash in sections and rinse thoroughly to control how much surface is removed.

Refill and Start Up

We refill the pool, balance the new water, and recommend care for the first weeks after the wash.

Acid Washing and Glendale Water

The City of Glendale describes its water as very hard, so scale is a common reason local pools need an acid wash. Every top off adds more calcium, and in hot weather that calcium can settle on plaster as rough, white deposits. After an acid wash, keeping calcium hardness and pH in range slows new buildup, so the fresh surface stays cleaner for longer.

For buildup only at the waterline, try pool tile cleaning. Chips or rough patches may need swimming pool repair. Keep the new surface protected with pool chemical balancing.
